caught between the cold and the waves

My head turns and spins like the earth on its axis as I think about this life and the change it brings.  It's funny how inevitable change is.  As I reflect on all the changes I have made in my life--from moving to Hawaii to chopping off my hair, I wonder what changes I have control over (the silly changes like getting bangs or re-arranging my room) and the changes that I will leave to God's command.  What's even more amusing is the fact that as much as I crave consistency, I can't avoid adjustment.

We all have to face change in our lives.  We start kindergarten, endure or enjoy middle school and high school, go off to college, get a degree, get married, have babies, grow old, retire, and die. And in that order, most of us live our lives.  Of course there are travels in between, trials to face, goals met, and books read but, I really believe it's the changes we go through and how we handle them that make us who we are.

I remember talking to my friends in high school dreaming of our futures, imagining the possibilities of marrying our homecoming dates and dream boys, thinking that everything was perfect and that life couldn't get any better.  But guess what?  It did.  I left for college, got over the boy whom I thought was heaven sent and perfect for me.  I survived my science classes, rough hook-ups, and I watched my first rated R movie.  I stayed up late and skipped a few classes but, I learned.  And I learned a lot.

The same thing happened my sophomore year.  I changed my major (there it is, that word again), learned to surf, got my first real job dealing with taxes and other adult concepts like "being on time" and "punching hours", and I fell in love.  A similar thought crossed my mind as it did my junior year of high school: life could not get any better.

Surprise!  It didn't (at least for a little while).

I came home for the summer and change hit me in the gut, like a boxer talking his first swing in a championship match.  The swing was hard.  I was unhappy, nervous, and anxious.  As unhappy, nervous, and anxious as I had ever been.  Maybe I missed the sun, or the salty ocean water, my tan skin, and blonde hair but the biggest change came from something else-- missing love.  I felt empty and heartbroken and in the strangest way. I was cold and resilient, yet so vulnerable and it scared me.  I lived in this stupor for nearly two months and it was miserable. Not only for me, but for everyone around me. Nothing made sense, my future seemed unclear, and I felt like everything that had been in my control was careening out of it.

(Excuse the poor analogies as I go on...)

A little less than a month ago, that boxer took another swing and instead of knocking the wind out of me, I dodged his blow.  I was moved and I took action.  It was weird, something inside of me changed and I began to feel happier and more content with my life.  I know for a fact that the change was wrought on by two things.  First, a conversation I had with one of my religious leaders about the chaos that I had become accustom to.  His council helped me increase my faith, patience and trust in God.  The second factor was this: I learned to accept change.  I had spent my days wishing for better ones ahead, I was waiting and hoping for things to change on their own when, all it took was me changing my attitude about the present.

Accepting change isn't easy and it can be difficult to take life day by day, to take the lemons that life hands us and turn them into lemonade (that process itself also takes a lot of added sugar).  But, it's up to us!  It takes a combination of hard work, goals, determination, a positive attitude, and God for life to taste like a cup of Country Time on a hot summer's day.

I want to predict my future and I wish I had that power but, I don't.  And that is a really beautiful thing. The endless possibilities of change that are ahead of me are mind-blowing and the idea that I can change, that I can be whoever I want to be is extremely liberating.  Sometimes change makes things better and other times, it makes me bitter and makes life seem daunting and terrifying but, it is through those changes and how we choose to deal with them that we become who we are destined to become.

One day I will graduate from college, find my sweetheart, marry the crap out of him, we will have babies, I'll get my masters degree, we'll travel, maybe start a business, build a home and play soccer in the front yard, we'll send our kids off to school, grow old together, I'll watch him retire, we'll have grandkids, we'll serve the Lord, and then we will die.

And it will be a beautiful, beautiful life full of ups and downs, trials and triumphs, happiness and sorrow, but made complete and whole by change.

my two-edged sword

the day i chopped my hair off

Sunday, November 20, 2011

i have been wanting to chop my hair off for quite some time now--so much that i decided to put it on my list of things to do before i turn twenty and so today when i mentioned to my roommates (for probably the billionth time) how i desired to go shorter, we decided today was the day.
i love change and i am use to short hair so it wasn't that big of a sacrifice for me.
but, it is short and i dig it.

before, during...

and after.

do i look narcissistic? just a little?
...crap.

i have come to find out that i really enjoy change.
today i decided i would like to move to new york and that i also want to cut my hair short.
and i'm talking boy short.
i also think it would be very cool to ditch school and travel the country in a volkswagon van.
the problem is, these plans all seem a bit drastic.
gah, maybe i should take it easy and start with my BYU application.
actually, that's probably a very good place to start.

We're done. But it's not over.

I sincerely apologize for the lack of attention I have given this blog as of late. It just get's hard to keep everything updated. I have had so much going on. I have a nannying job every Tuesday and Thursday from 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon. As a result, my life has been crazy. Call me the babysitting machine because that is all I have been doing. If I am not tending children, chances are, you will find me driving around campus yelling at all the annoying zoobies. The students are back in town; let the yelling begin. That may be one of my favorite past times. What makes matters worse is that since BYU starts school tomorrow, everyone has moved out and are moving on and I have another 12 days left till I arrive at that point of my life. I am in major limbo. The friends that I have hung out with all summer have to, quote, "fit me into their busy schedules" now...you know what I say to that? BOGUS. I am getting so excited to leave. I keep fighting the urge to pack my bags.
*less than two weeks Kenze, you can make it*
You know what else is weird? Coulsen and Jordan gave their farewell talks today. It still baffles me as to how fast time goes by. I mean, Coulsen took me on my first date. That does not seem like that long ago at all.
There is a line from the song Everybody's Changing by Keane that says, "You're gone from here, soon you will disappear, fading into beautiful light. Cause everybody's changing...and I don't feel the same." It's one of those harsh realities. Everyone is going their own way. I've been having a hard time with that lately because change scares me. It's sad to think a lot people who have been really big parts of my life, won't be anymore. It's that whole, "some people are in your life for a season, some are there for a reason" type thing.
Change is so unknown.
Adjusting to change is just as bizarre.
I think it frightens me even more to realize, I am changing. I am getting older and I realize change is good but it is still one of my biggest fears.
However, if you can believe it, I am not scared about the biggest change of my life to date. I feel so much peace about my decision to go to BYU Hawaii. I have talked to Corbin so much about it and I honestly know I am suppose to be there. I am so pumped. I can't imagine what my life would be like if I was staying here in Utah. It's a weird thought, really.

LESS THAN TWO WEEKS. YOU CAN MAKE IT.
WOOT.

Somewhere over the rainbow...

I know I talk about this a lot but, today it really, REALLY hit me. After sending in my housing contract, signing up for my classes and looking at flight prices...BAM, just like a ton of bricks, in less than 3 months I will be miles away from home. Miles away from my hilarious brothers, miles away from my protective parents, miles away from home cooked meals. Miles away from my amazing grandparents, my cousins, my bed, my best friends. I am scared. I will me miles away from my comfort zone. No more spending Sunday nights on my grandparents porch, laughing with my brothers as we clean up after dinner, I won't even be home for Thanksgiving. I am so excited, yet so terrified. I know I am suppose to be there, without a doubt in my mind. Today as I watched a video about the campus and heard the quote by David O. McKay "..from this school, will go men and women whose influence will be felt for good toward the establishment of peace internationally" I had tears in my eyes. Now as I think about not being there for Ryan's basketball season or seeing Trevor get pumped for the deer hunt, I have tears in my eyes because I can not express how much I will miss them and everything else that I have loved about home for the past 18 years of my life! It's all part of growing up and I can't wait for the experiences I am going to have but i'm freaking out.
I feel bad even comparing this to a mission but I admire the courage missionaries have so much more now. They leave there homes knowing they can't call home when they get homesick or Skype to see their families faces. Holy freak, what faith and courage.
I keep telling people that, "September 10th can't come soon enough." But right now, time can slow down. You know what they say, "home is where the heart is."

Seriously?...Seriously?...

It's official. I have conformed to the world of blogging. Don't let my first post deceive you. This is a whole new world to me. How many bloggers are there in the world? Probably millions, how pathetic am I? I have been absolutely dreadful at keeping my journal updated as of late so, I figured what the heck...blog. So, blog I will.

I guess you could say that I am at that critical point in my life where things are constantly changing. Two months ago I was dead set on going to hair school but alas, in around 6 months, I will be heading in the complete opposite direction to the beautiful island of Oahu for my college experience. It still amazes me that in 3 months I will leave the hallowed halls of Timpview High School! And dear reader, this may surprise you but I could not be more thrilled. Change is one of my biggest fears, but, this one....Bring. It. On.

...And that is why I started this blog; to keep everyone who is interested updated on what is happening in my ever-changing life...My amazing Aunt Amy gave me the idea because hopefully as I head into the spring/summer months and of into my college life I will have experiences that will be worth blogging about. So reader, I hope you enjoy what will probably, most likely, be my substitute for a journal.
